October 2011 - Ollie Brooks
Ollie is a mischievous and lovable three year old lion head rabbit.
Ollie has become a regular at Okeford, visiting the practice monthly. He was seen in 2008, at just over a year old. His incisors had overgrown and Ollie was finding it difficult to eat properly. Upon examination it was discovered that Ollie had a maligned jaw preventing his teeth from wearing down correctly. His owner was informed that due to his misaligned jaw he would need to have regular dental for the duration of his life.
Upon admission Ollie was administered an anti inflammatory drug and pain relief, he was also given 60ml of fluids under the skin and fibreplex into his mouth (this encourages normal digestive function, as rabbits can suffer from gut stasis).
Ollie was “masked” down using isoflurane anaesthetic gas and oxygen, once a deep enough plain of anaesthesia had been reached the mask was removed and the veterinary surgeon began to burr down the elongated incisors to a manageable length, then then rasped the upper and lower molars.
Ollie was placed back on oxygen once the procedure had finished, then into the incubator to keep him warm. Ollie recovered well from the anaesthesia and went home later that day.
Ollie comes for dental checks every month, and on average has dental work every 2 months. Ollie is a wonderful character and has never once put up any fuss to being anaesthetised and having a dental.
