Parvovirus
Confirmed case of Parvovirus at Okeford Vets, Okehampton
Last week our Okehampton centre had a confirmed case of Parvovirus, a highly infectious and potentially fatal disease, affecting a 6 month old Border Collie puppy.
Following previously confirmed cases in the major cities in the South West, the practice has been on high alert for the disease in the Okehampton area.
A previous article in the Okehampton Times had already outlined the disease as one primarily affecting puppies under 1 year old and unvaccinated dogs. The virus causes bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, collapse, dehydration. It can ultimately be fatal.
Once admitted to the practice the puppy was placed in the isolation unit to prevent the spread of this contagious disease. Treatment included the use of anti-viral drugs, antibiotics and intravenous fluids. Over the course of almost a week’s hospitalisation, treatment and intensive nursing the puppy made a slow and steady recovery. She is now at home with her owners.
This case has only emphasised the regional spread of this disease amongst the dog population. We would urge all dog owners to vaccinate their puppies from 8 weeks of age onwards, previously vaccinated dogs to have their routine annual boosters and for any lapsed dogs to restart their vaccinations. Please contact the practice for further information.
