Firework Season is here again!
Yes, it doesn't seem like we've blinked since the Daps, Feliways etc were out ready to help our pets through the Stresses of Fireworks! But here we are again!
NOW is the time to plug in your diffusers, make sure you have refills and thinking about creating a nice cosy safe haven for your pets.
What shuold I be doing?
- The Adaptil (formerly known as DAP) diffusers need to be plugged in and switched on as soon as possible now to get the true benefit
- Products such as Zylkene, or Royal Canins Calm diet also need a week or 2 head start to reap the benefits
- For quicker acting products the Adaptil Collar, or new product Calmex can be effective
- Make sure your pet has a 'Safe' place to go to - this can be a covered crate with a nice cosy bed in it, or a bed behind the sofa for your dog, or somewhere high up (tops of cupboards or wardrobes etc) for cats, although some cats may go under the cupboards/sofas etc!
- For Rabbits and Guinea Pigs, bring them in to a garage or conservatory etc for the night
- When the fireworks start increase the volume on your TV or Radio to mask the loud bangs as much as possible
- Don't comfort your dog as this encourages the fearful behaviour - as hard as it is, try to ignore all the fearful behaviour, and don't react to the firework noises, this way you are creating a good 'role model' to your pet
By following these guidelines you can help your pet cope better with the Firework noises, unfortunately there is no quick miracle cure for a noise phobic animal but we can make things calm and safe for them. (And maybe consider a desensitisation program once the stress period is over)
If you have a pet with an extreme phobia, please do not hesitate to call us for advice, our Vets, Nurses and Receptionists are happy to discuss and advise you which may be the best route for your pet.
